Four Wives—One guy is fundamentally about a polygynous family members in rural Iran. It starts with two penned statements: “The Quran: ‘Marry two, three, or four spouses it, ’” and “In Iran polygamy is located primarily in rural areas. Whenever you can afford sic” These are followed closely by a scene that is spectacular of and kids joking and playing on a golden mountain of recently harvested grain. The movie continues with photographic shots of every of the four spouses, associated with noise bites of the voices that are own on their own. Finally, the husband is seen by us, Heda. Standing close to him is his son, subtly parodying their dad’s stance, but there’s no sound that is accompanying to introduce him. Alternatively, we hear his old and mother that is feisty her son as only enthusiastic about intercourse. Doubting Heda the formal introduction afforded their wives is an imaginative cinematic put?down of an embarrassing character and a reversal regarding the typical training of launching males, not ladies, by title.

The movie’s message seems to be the common problem among polygynous households—a guy whom marries an extra spouse has a tendency to lose fascination with their very first spouse. Because the spouses continue steadily to compete for Heda’s attention, the next spouse and 3rd spouse each blames her unhappiness regarding the next spouse, just as if she by herself hadn’t upstaged an early on spouse. Over and over over repeatedly, they scapegoat each other. The 4th wife praises Heda as a great spouse and declares, “I do not be sorry for having hitched Heda, but i really do be sorry for having hitched a person with three spouses. ” Just Heda’s mom along with his wife that is first blame for behaving irresponsibly. Heda is physically and verbally abusive, relentlessly teasing and arguing along with his spouses, and threatening to marry just as before. He treats their kids approximately. But we additionally see him using their family members for a picnic, tenderly cradling a new resting child, using their toddler, being affectionate together with his 4th wife.

The women are not presented as passive victims in spite of their unhappiness. The next, 3rd, and 4th spouses had been divorced if they met Heda. They explain their initial reluctance to marry an already married man. Just the wife that is second forced to marry him by her moms and dads. The other two Heda that is married against moms and dads’ desires. Most of the wives remain true with their spouse once they feel necessary. The first spouse has not a problem permitting Heda understand of her annoyance with him. We hear their spouses scold him for their mistakes that are financial for ignoring their young ones. One spouse defends her child’s gown whenever Heda accuses her of immodesty. Even though the spouses complain loudly of Heda’s numerous marriages, everyday life one of them includes scenes full of laughter and shared help along with bitter disputes.

Technically, numerous areas of this movie are aesthetically stunning. Its power as ethnography is based on its depiction of rural life that is domestic. Material tradition fans will enjoy its footage that is extraordinary of bread, family members dishes, carpeting weaving, home furnishings, livestock care, a household picnic, and ladies performing their frustrations because they work. A thread that is important through the initial 1 / 2 of the movie could be the incessant bawdy humor among loved ones, including Heda’s senior mom. Not just is it funny, however it humanizes its topics and offers a rare glimpse into the frank banter and humor that is so typical within families in the centre East. The assertiveness and behavior associated with the ladies contradict typical stereotypes regarding the Muslim woman as target (cf. Laila Lalami, “The Missionary Position, ”The Country, 19, 2006) june. On a few occasions, Heda’s spouses freely question their monetary judgment. Ziba asks Heda to create the dining dining table while a water is smoked by her pipeline. On another event, he helps himself to tea. Obviously, their four spouses try not to always serve him.
